The vision of an open place of reflection began in 1988 in the eastern part of Berlin and became a project for the entire city after reunification in 1990. Inspired by the meditation room at the United Nations in New York, a dedicated group of initiators worked to create such a space in a building near the former border between East and West.
In 1994, the Room of Silence was officially opened in the Brandenburg Gate – thanks to the initiative of Dr Maria Diefenbach and under the patronage of Dr Hanna-Renate Laurien. Since then, the room has been inviting people from all over the world to come and find peace every day. To this day, a dedicated support group looks after this unique project, which is a symbol of peace, tolerance and dialogue.
Peace and quiet and the right lighting go hand in hand. This is also true in the Room of Silence. Hidden behind white slats, only complemented by chairs for lingering, our Basic A1 luminaire shines. This round surface-mounted luminaire with an opal diffuser made of satin-finished acrylic glass gently and evenly diffuses the light, is infinitely dimmable and thus perfectly matches the mood of the room.
